Knowledgeable New York City Lawyer Handles Trusts and Estates

Attentive attorney helps clients make future arrangements for their finances

Providing for loved ones is often top of mind for people considering the inheritance they will leave when they pass. There are several ways to arrange for money and other property to be distributed, with different options better suited to different situations. From the Law Offices of John Mangelli in Flushing, New York, I have spent nearly two decades helping people in Bronx, Queens, Kings and Nassau counties find the solutions that are best for them. I also represent individuals who wish to challenge the terms of wills that they believe to be invalid.

Respected Queens attorney protects New Yorkers’ legacies

I can help my clients create wills and living trusts for their estates, and I work with beneficiaries to access the inheritances that are bequeathed to them. I offer my services for the arrangement of:

  • Wills — A last will and testament is a legal document meant to determine how your property, finances and loved ones should be cared for upon your death. I can help you draw up a will that makes your wishes clear.
  • Probate — If a person leaves behind a will that includes personal property worth $30,000 or more, the distribution of assets by the executor can only occur after the will is proven valid through probate, a process that takes place in New York City’s surrogate court. If you are the executor of a will, I can help you file a probate petition and manage your other legal responsibilities. For estates valued at less than $30,000 (“small estates”), I can help you avoid the probate process in favor of a simpler administration proceeding.
  • Living trusts — Setting up a living trust may allow your beneficiaries to avoid the time and expenses involved in the probate process. Living trusts can include many types of assets, such as real estate, automobiles and bank accounts. Grantors (creators) of living trusts can continue using all of the assets in the trust during their lifetime. I can provide guidance on whether a living trust may be right for you.

When a loved one dies and no will exists, I can lead eligible clients through the process involved with being appointed as an estate’s administrator.

Experienced counselor advocates for clients in inheritance disputes

Dealing with conflicts that arise during the distribution of an estate can be incredibly stressful for the deceased’s family and loved ones. If you believe that a will is invalid due to fraud, such as in instances of the deceased signing the document under duress or while in a compromised mental state, I can work to demonstrate that you have a rightful claim to the estate. I also represent beneficiaries whose inheritances are challenged. My goal is to obtain a result that conforms with the decedent’s instructions.
